2008 Alumni Banquet

Category: Reunion
Classes: All

The annual Advance Alumni Banquet was held Saturday August 30 2008 in the KC Hall at Advance. The doors opened at 430 pm for socializing. There were 132 alumni guests and faculty present. Honor classes were those years ending in 8. The class of 1938 had 2 members present; 1948 had 2; 1958 had 21; 1968 had 12; 1978 had 8; 1988 had 1. The invocation was given by Brian Keene. The meal was served by Zeiglers Catering of Benton. During the business meeting President Mitzi Seger announced that the web site is again up and running. The site had a server problem and a problem with attempted attacks by hackers. It was shut down until everything was cleared. She also announced that board members have agreed to serve another year but any volunteer members would be appreciated. Entertainment for the evening was provided by violinist Jennifer Beal who is a 5th grade student at Advance Elementary. The meeting concluded with the singing of the School Song led by alumni who had been AHS Cheerleaders.

Alumni Contact Information, Needs Updates

Category: Other
Classes: All

Glad you are visiting your alumni website. Please take a moment to check out your profile. Is your email address up to date? Would you like to change any of your information? We occassionally have information to send out to certain graduating classes and hate for you to be left out. Today I was trying to send out news to this year's alumni banquet honor classes, 1938-1948-1958-1968-1978-1988-1998, and very few email addresses were valid. So please take a moment and update or create your profile. Thank you.

Pigs Fly in Florida

Category: Career
Class: 1979

Phyllis Redman (Class of 1979) and her husband, Eric Breitenbach have produced a feature documentary film that has received critical acclaim by film critics from Orlando, FL, to Hollywood, CA.

"When Pigs Fly" chronicles the life of Lory Yazurlo, a former truck driver who was rendered quadriplegic in an on-the-job accident in 1991, and her subsequent descent into madness.

A critic from the Hollywood Reporter writes:
"Bottom line: An unflinching portrait of how a woman chooses to live after a devastating injury and a damning testament to the gaping holes in the workers' compensation system."

Film Threat reviewer Cecilia Aldarando comments:
"...there's a dark sensibility amidst all this Americana. 'When Pigs Fly' is a family narrative that is slightly twisted, with a dark humor about it all---not ironic, not sardonic, but not entirely celebratory either....[the film] forces our hand in considering our own judgments, and the power we wield in that moment.

The film premiered in January 2007 at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in Palm Springs, CA. Redman and Breitenbach are hoping to sign a distribution deal before the end of the year.

You can see the trailer from the film, photographs, producer info, and a blog (primarily written by Lory's mother, Charlene) on the website at:
